Windows and Doors

Fiddly little books.. what was I thinking!?

This week I have been cutting small pieces, my glasses have been in full use! Gradually I have been filling each window of the French house box with tiny little books.. why did I make so many windows?
Anyway questions about my sanity aside they are all slowly coming together.

Here is a little taster of the pieces I have been making.

The overall theme of these books are windows, doors, thus shutters, ironwork and views.

Book 7 Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre, 5 towns on the north west coast of Italy. They are perched on the cliffs of the coastline, and people have cultivated the land and lived there for 1000 years! so hard to imagine lugging building and farming material up the steep hills, and by steep I mean really steep!!

My little concertina book is double sided, the front showing the hills and villages of Riomaggiorre, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterossa. I have used the brochure that had photos of the towns, so I cut them out and used the rest of the brochure as the book base. I covered the brochure with torn nice paper in the shape of the hills, and on the back I painted gesso over the whole thing. The rest of the imagery is painted with watercolour over watercolour pastels.

and the back of the book shows the train that runs between them- mostly through a tunnel, and the walking track that many people walk along. Actually there are many walking tracks that explore the hills/mountains behind the villages but there is a main track that runs along the coastline - steep and thin and magnificent. This side of the book has been gessoed then I used a fineliner pen to draw and the map of the area became the train!

Countdown to take off

Only 6 more sleeps until take off for the Great Adventure!!
I have been preparing my travel project and I have decided that one of the things I will be doing is creating a simple book per city, using found papers, brochures, tickets, maps etc along the way. I will probably post them home so I can have a record of where it came from and a stamp.
I have made a few model books as I hope it will then imprint in my memory how to make them and also inspire me to make them!!

Here are a few of my models and notes

Books as sculpture

Today I thought I would show you a selection of my books.
This book explores the merchant culture of Vietnam, in it's many varied forms. It is a carousel book and I have combined my photos and drawings to create it

World Trip - carousel book. This is a quick trip around the meal tables of the world ( Vietnam, India, Greece, Morocco and Japan), then back to Melbourne , where we have a wonderful mix of people, culture and food.

"Open Door Policy" is about the way we operate our home, it is a place where we welcome everyone, to eat, drink, chat, spend time with each other. We hope to reflect the love we have for Jesus through our home.

This piece is "Book of Knowledge" it is a bridge between the unknown and the known.
